B5: All In The Family
Not since the Jackson 5 have there been five equally talented brothers. The Breeding Boys are hoping to carve out a niche in the market and become the next generation of boy band talent. Currently residing in Atlanta, the brothers have been scouting the U.S. showing off their skills to anyone who would listen. Their album, "All I Do", hits stores July 19th and it vows to take high-energy rhythm, soulful ballads and pumping dance moves to another level.
B5's charm, clean lyrics, and boyish good looks seem like a promising recipe to make pre-teen girls swoon. And although they've had to make a few sacrifices to focus on their careers, the boys are thrilled with the perks of the music industry and hope to follow the career paths of their musical idols. Check out what they had to say in our interview with B5.
TeenMusic.com: Ok guys, can you introduce yourselves?
B5: We've got Dustin who's 17, Kelly's 15, Patrick's 14, Carnell's 13 and Bryan's 10.
TeenMusic.com: Can you describe a typical day in the life of B5?
Patrick:
Get up at 5 o'clock in the morning.
Kelly: Then we'll go straight to a radio station and do a morning interview and then do two shows after that and then go to another radio interview. Then we'll go eat somewhere and do school work and then...
Dustin: More interviews.
Kelly: Yeah, and then we'll fly out somewhere and go to sleep at 2 o'clock in the morning and do it all over again.
TeenMusic.com: What do you do for fun?
B5: Play Basketball!
Patrick: Go to our friends houses', play video games, get some sleep.
TeenMusic.com: What do you think you'd be doing if you weren't making music?
Kelly: I want my own clothing line.
Dustin:
I'd probably be playing football or making beats or something. I'd still want to be in the music industry.
Patrick: I'd probably be playing basketball or playing beats or making shoes.
Carnell: I'd probably want to be making movies or playing basketball.
Bryan: I'd like to play football or play videos games.
TeenMusic.com: Who has a girlfriend and who is single?
B5: We're all single!
TeenMusic.com: Have you been compared to Pretty Ricky? How do you think you set yourself apart?
Dustin: We're all brothers and we all sing.
Patrick: They basically all rap and they only have one singer in the group. We mostly all sing.
TeenMusic.com: Why did you change from TNT Boyz to B5?
Kelly:
When we were the TNT Boyz, Bryan wasn't in the group then. We decided to put Bryan in the group later on and then the team at Bad Boy (records) said we had to change the name. We chose B5 and everybody liked it so we stuck with it.
TeenMusic.com: You've performed with some really big acts. Which one was the most memorable?
Bryan: The last one that we did in DC with Ciara and Bobby Valentino.
Kelly: It was so crazy. When we were on stage we had to cut the performance short. The kids were acting too crazy and people were getting squished up on the fence because they were trying to get up on the stage.
Carnell: Girls kept fainting left and right!
Dustin: We were originally supposed to do four songs but we had to cut it short because all the girls were trippin'. We only did two songs, our two singles.
TeenMusic.com: Describe the role of each member in the group?
Dustin: I sing some of the leads and adlibs.
Kelly: I'm more of the rapper in the group. I hold down all the raps. Patrick does most of the leads and Carnell does leads and adlibs and backgrounds. Carnell's got the more high-pitched voice.
TeenMusic.com: When did Bryan join the group?
Kelly:
When he was 9 (He's now 10). When we moved out to Atlanta we saw a couple of people and we told them that we were doing auditions and they were like "Ya'll are hot! Ya'll are hot! You should put him in the group" - pointing at Bryan. Bryan was just sitting on the floor playing a playstation and we're like "Hey Bryan, you wanna be in the group?" We didn't really want him to at first because he was so little but we put him in anyway and it worked out good.
TeenMusic.com: What's the best part about being in the music business?
Dustin: You get to skip lines in the airport. (laughs) Kelly: It's fun being in the music business because you get to do a lot of things that other people don't get to do. It's also a lot of hard work and you don't get to sleep that much. We get special treatment sometimes.
TeenMusic.com: What does the future hold for you?
Patrick:
We're on the first half of our promotional tour right now and right now we're doing a lot of spring specials and a lot of shows and in a couple of weeks we'll be doing the second half of our tour for the album. We're going to be doing a lot of radio interviews and doing a lot of shows and just trying to promote our album the best way. We're trying to go on tour with Omarion but we're still trying to figure all of that out.
Carnell: And we're trying to go on tour with Aaron Carter and Lil' Romeo.
TeenMusic.com: Who inspired you guys to get into the music industry?
Bryan: Michael Jackson speaks for everybody.
TeenMusic.com: How did you break into the music industry?
Kelly: We would just do a lot of shows and (talent) contests and people would see us and you just get their information and you meet a lot of people. When the video came out was when everything started rollin' real fast.
TeenMusic.com: What advice would you give to young teens trying to make it big?
Bryan: Never give up.
Carnell: Give it 110% all the time. Don't have negative people around you because they'll weigh you down. Just keep positive people around you.
Patrick: Make sure you believe in yourself and make sure you know just how much it takes to get into it. Some people think that it's really easy but you've got to sacrifice a lot.
TeenMusic.com: Other than sleep, what sacrifices have you had to make?
Carnell: Hanging out with our friends.
Kelly: We definitely don't get to hang out with our friends as much. We can't go to malls anymore because we get stalked and mobbed.
Patrick: We don't get to see our family that much.
TeenMusic.com: Do you think it's important to finish school?
B5: Yeah! Carnell: You gotta finish school if you want to be in this business. You need to know how to read contracts and all that.
Kelly: We go to Atlanta Country Day School and they provide us with a tutor when we're out of town and everything.
TeenMusic.com: You have two videos on our site right now. All I do and You got Me. One is very slow –mo/laid back and the other is more of a party song. Which style do you guys prefer?
Kelly: We like to dance a lot so probably more of the up tempo stuff.(Everyone agrees).
TeenMusic.com: How would you describe the rest of the album?
Kelly: The rest of the album is real crazy. We've got a few slow songs in there that are real good but most of it is up tempo. It's real cool though. It's got a great variety.
Carnell: There's room for everybody on the album. Not just black people, but white people, Chinese people, African people. Everybody.
TeenMusic.com: Do you have any last words for your fans?
Patrick: Album comes out July 19th!
Kelly: We love them and thank-you for supporting B5.
