Tidbits from "Whip It's" Love Interest

Tidbits from "Whip It's" Love Interest

He's tall, he's adorable, he's a musician turned actor and we cornered him!

In Drew Barrymore's girl-centric roller derby film Whip It, the Ellen Page character Bliss is inexperienced in love and ready to fall hard. Accommodating her is hot musician Oliver (Landon Pigg) who sweeps Bliss off her feet for a romance as heady and whirlwind as her wild action on the derby track! Landon Pigg has the same kind of "fight for independence" background as Drew. He was grabbed up at 19 by RCA records but they tended to over-polish his sound until he felt the real "him" had disappeared. In 2007-08, Landon's unreleased song about unrequited love in a coffee shop was picked for that " A Diamond is Forever" commercial and went on to land on AT&T spots as well.

Landon hit the road and a few talk shows and has just released his sophomore album "The Boy Who Never" which contains "Falling in Love At A Coffee Shop" of course.

Picture this sandy-haired cutie in black vest over plaid shirt and wearing grey pants and a tie that he was trying to tie at our interview on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood.

TeenHollywood: Hi! Are you just re-tying your tie over there? Can we start the questions?

Landon: I can hear you. I actually pay attention better when my hands are busy doing something else.

TeenHollywood: Okay! Landon, how did Drew find you? Did she know your music?

Landon: She was aware of some of my songs and got it touch with me to see if I'd be interested in trying out and reading some lines because she was interested in finding a musician to play an actor rather than the other way around. I was very game to try something new. New experiences can only be for the better and more enlightening so I was like 'yeah, let's go for it!' It seemed like a fun group of people to hang out with.

Landon Pigg and Ellen Page in "Whip It" | Fox Searchlight TeenHollywood: How was it working with Ellen Page? I would think pretty intimidating your first time out.

Landon: Ellen is amazingly professional; one of the most intriguing people that I know. She's a tough nut to crack and that makes her all the more tantalizing if that's the right word.

TeenHollywood: What's it like for your new album and your movie to come out the same week?

Landon: I don't know but I'm gonna experience post-partum depression probably afterward. But it's neat. I took a shower today and I was thinking it's just a normal day and I looked at the date and I was like 'oh, the 29th, this is the day that a lot of things are happening'. But, the thing to realize when you're making an album is I've already done the months of work a long time ago and had a blast doing it and same with the movie. It's been a year and, to me, all the fun parts have already happened. And so now it's just kind of showing the work that we've had a blast making.

TeenHollywood: Okay, your character Oliver in Whip It doesn't really treat Bliss too well once he's on the road with his band. If you had a girlfriend and you were on the road, would you call her or just give her t-shirt to another girl?

Landon: You know what? That's good. You're asking the hard questions. I'll probably text her... all right? Okay. In this movie she (Drew) was pretty interested in making it non-descript, I mean vague as to what era it was. So the cars were kind of a certain way, blah, blah, blah.

TeenHollywood: And Bliss is on the pay phone. There's not a lot of cell phones.

Landon: Yeah. So, in real life, I would have texted but I can understand (what he does), from a musician's perspective, 'cause I'm in the middle of a van and trailer tour now, similar and what happens in this, right? (He gets up, pretends to hold a phone to his ear and paces). You don't want to get lovey dovey in front of the dudes with your girl so everybody's waiting for the bathroom stop or when you've got to fuel up. The tour manager's pumping the gas and everybody scatters to opposite corners of the gas station and they're like texting and talking and really getting it all out.

TeenHollywood: That sounds very real. Your song "Falling In Love at a Landon Pigg | RCA RecordsCoffee Shop" is getting a lot of play on the AT&T commercials. Would you say that is more indicative of your new album or the set we heard last night (at the roller derby event supporting the film)?

Landon: 50/50 is more indicative. Some is nice and pretty and some moms are going to enjoy it. Some is fun rock music that you can have a good time with at a live show.

TeenHollywood: Who are your influences?

Landon: I like Nat King Cole. I like Frank Sinatra. I like Radiohead. I like Nick Drake. There's a lot of good musicians out there and there's no reason to point out one or two. But, I've done that for you.

TeenHollywood: Landon what would you tell your friends as to why they should go see Whip It?

Landon: If you want to get a little cheer goin', you should see it. I'm a fan of anything that helps draw my emotions out because apathy is the worst. It's just insurmountable. I love Marcia (Gay Harden), Daniel Stern, Ellen's great. They really draw it out of you. It's just a blast to see the whole cast hang out on screen and it's a really fun movie and the music is great in it as well.

TeenHollywood: You and Ellen have an underwater, flirty scene. How long can you hold your breath? Ellen wasn't sure how long she could hold hers.

Landon: One minute and thirty seconds (big grin.. He's probably kidding).
